Bimodal Hearing in Individuals with Severe-to-Profound Hearing Loss: Benefits, Challenges, and Management

Abstract: Binaural hearing offers numerous advantages over monaural hearing. While bilateral implants are a successful treatment option for some patients, many individuals choose to achieve binaural hearing by using a cochlear implant with a contralateral hearing aid. Compared with monaural hearing, benefits of bimodal hearing include improved speech perception in quiet and in noise, improved localization, and more natural sound quality. Despite the advantages, there exist disadvantages to bimodal hearing, primarily rel… Show more

“…Extensive auditory training is necessary to achieve this and to adapt to the new set of acoustic-phonetic cues. While there is evidence for a bimodal benefit in speech perception tests (11,12), neurophysiological alterations associated with successful bimodal comprehension remain to be explored. It is likely that cognitive (top-down) processing compensates for some of the binaural discrepancies in sensory (bottom-up) processing.…”

“…Bimodal hearing, on the other hand, enhances the perceived acoustic information by providing more detailed and natural auditory signals (46,47). Both clinical and research experiences show that "bimodal" in general reflects preserved low frequency hearing combined with electric hearing as this preservation improves spectral resolution and perception of temporal fine structure information (48).…”

(Veugen et al, 2016;Vroegop et al, 2018).…”
