BIM Guidelines Inform Facilities Management Databases: A Case Study over Time

Abstract: A building information model (BIM) contains data that can be accessed and exported for other uses during the lifetime of the building especially for facilities management (FM) and operations. Working under the guidance of well-designed BIM guidelines to insure completeness and compatibility with FM software, architects and contractors can deliver an information rich data model that is valuable to the client. Large owners such as universities often provide these detailed guidelines and deliverable requirements … Show more

“…BIM promises a solution to the digital representation of the building facility during the design phase and later during operation [24]. Compared to the conventional two-dimensional drawings, the digital building model that emerges in BIM contains all the relevant information about materials and components with numerous life-cycle-related data, such as material properties, geographic information, quantities, function, life, composition, and costs [25]. In addition, the information can be expanded as required to represent the specific building requirements.…”

“…In general, the development of BIM procedures to support FM could lead to different sets of tools, e.g., to simply exchange data with third party plugin to populate spreadsheets or to directly be connected with a CAFM software. No matter the procedure, this kind of connection is important for acquiring spatial information [2].…”

“…To that end, a common format has been developed to transmit information necessary for facilities management [4]. In a case study conducted over time, the use of BIM data for facilities management using numerous software applications at a university was examined [5], and a system that displays BIM data generated from BIM software on a website was developed [6]. Recently, research aimed at utilizing BIM in existing buildings has increased.…”
