Constructing free-form buildings is very complex due to the difficulty in fabricating the curved façade. To install the façade, the complex geometric shapes of the façade need to be divided into panels. The panels developed are classified into three categories in terms of their curvatures, i.e., planar, single-curved, double-curved panels. The quality of the curved façade is determined by the geometric difference between as-built and as-designed panel shapes. Among the three types of curved panels, the double-curved panel is very difficult to form, showing greater quality discrepancy than the other two panel types. Ensuring the as-built quality of the curved façade is for contractors. The main objective of this study is to enhance small/mid-size contractors’ capacity of managing the as-built quality of the double-curved panel. To meet the study objectives, a case study of a small free-form building and empirical mock-up tests of curved panels were performed and beneficial lessons for the contractors were identified through the tests. Among diverse materials, aluminum and glass-fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) were utilized for the mock-up tests. Three-dimensional laser scanning technology was employed to foster the as-built data of the case study project and the mocked-up double-curved panels. The data superimposition method was used to measure the deviation between the as-designed and the as-built data of the case study.

Transformation of the AEC industry has been found to face significant and persistent hurdles both internal and external to the industry, such as industrial fragmentation, difficulty in talent recruiting, inadequate collaboration and knowledge transfer. Meanwhile, advances and maturity in digital technologies recent years offer tremendous potential to tackle these challenges. Examples include Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deep learning, computer vision, big data analytics, Building Information Models (BIM), 3D scanning, Augmented Reality (AR), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), autonomous driving, and blockchain. We envision that the next generation platform for the AEC industry shall integrate this diverse list of digital technologies. In this paper, we review the stateof-the-art in related literature aiming at creating such an integrated platform. Our review is organized into the following four themes, and for each of them, we also identify gaps and challenges. 1. AI-based BIM model generation: this topic addresses how to make BIM models more ubiquitous, which includes the automatic generation of As-planned BIM model from 2D drawings and the automatic generation of As-built BIM model from site images/videos and point clouds. 2. Blockchain-based collaboration: this theme explores the possibilities of applying Blockchain for AEC to improve various essential aspects such as trust in multi-party collaboration and contract enforcement. 3. AR-based visualization: this topic studies the AR-based visualization for construction management, which aims to increase the efficiency of information transmission. 4. AI-based Construction management: this area reviews the application of AI in progress monitoring, safety management, quality management, and contract management. Based on the above analysis, we conclude by outlining potential topics of a research framework for creating a next generation AI platform for AEC.

Dam is a structure with high beneficial values and these include, serving as the source of raw water supply and electrical energy, ensuring flood reduction, tourist attractions, and habitat protection. It is, however, associated with a very complex development process ranging from the planning/design, construction, as well as operation and maintenance. Therefore, there is a need for special attention, accuracy, and good coordination at every stage from the parties involved as well as the integration of all fields starting from the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) elements. Moreover, ensuring an effective and efficient construction process presents a serious challenge for the owner/government, designers, consultants and contractors which is now being resolved through the use of a technological innovation known as the Building Information Modeling (BIM).This study was conducted to determine the scientific developments of BIM for dam management and also to identify further related areas to be researched in the future. Moreover, the analysis was concentrated on the potential added value of the technological innovations on dams, explained its advantages, and assesses the potential challenges hampering its effectiveness in Indonesia. It was discovered that the use of BIM for dam projects is possible as long as there are adequate government regulations and the availability of qualified human resources while the consequence would be an increase in the investment cost. The findings of this research are expected to encourage the use of BIM in dam construction and management in Indonesia and also to increase efficiency and effectiveness in all aspects.
