Biliary Papillomatosis and New Ultrasound Imaging Modalities

Abstract: Biliary papillomatosis (BP) is a rare disorder of the biliary tract with a significant risk of malignant transformation and a high recurrence rate after operation due to the diffuse distribution of the disease. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult also by reason of the low sensitivity and specificity of conventional ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) and positron emission tomography (PET). Therefore, the introduction of new di… Show more

“…The worms can be extracted endoscopically [48]. Other rare bile duct diseases have to be ruled out (e. g., fasciolosis or papillomatosis) [49]. Ascariasis in the biliary tract can have any of the following imaging features on ultrasound [50]: 1.…”

“…Papillennahe Tumoren bieten in der Regel keine diagnostische Schwierigkeit für die Endosonografie. Gelegentlich kann Steinoder Sludgematerial nicht eindeutig von Tumoren abgegrenzt werden [20]. Dies liegt insbesondere daran, dass typischerweise intraduktale Konkremente keine komplette Schallreflexion aufweisen, sondern als echogene Raumforderungen imponieren.…”

“…The role of CEUS in patients with Klatskin tumors is underestimated in our view but convincing data have not yet been published. Promising findings have been observed in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and billiary papillomatosis [65], e. g., determining the depth of wall infiltration and surrounding tissue mainly using contrast-enhanced endoscopic US but lesions can be also detected by transabdominal ultrasound ( • " Fig. 14).…”
