The need to increase network efficiency, enhance reliability, and reduce environmental effects, as well as advances in communication infrastructures, have led to demand response (DR) becoming an essential part of smart grid operation. DR can provide power system operators with a range of flexible resources through different schemes. From the operational decision-making viewpoint, in practice, each scheme can affect the system performance differently. Therefore, categorizing different DR schemes based on their potential impacts on the power grid, operational targets, and economic incentives can embed a pragmatic and practical perspective into the selection approach. In order to provide such insights, this paper presents an extensive review of DR programs. A goal-oriented classification based on the type of market, reliability, power flexibility and the participants' economic motivation is proposed for DR programs. The benefits and barriers based on new classes are presented. Every involved party, including the power system operator and participants, can utilize the proposed classification to select a proper plan in the DR-related ancillary service ecosystem. The various enabling technologies and practical strategies for the application of DR schemes in various sectors are reviewed. Following this, changes in the procedure of DR schemes in the smart community concept are studied. Finally, the direction of future research and development in DR is discussed and analyzed.

This paper describes an overview of the optimal energy coordination/management approaches for microgrids. The article presents the smart grid environment in conjunction with their technologies into the applications of a microgrid when the energy coordination aims to create power flow stability between the generation and consumption of the electricity. This energy equilibrium is made regardless of a power grid complexity that can contain diverse load demands and distributed energy resources (DERs), including renewable energy system (RES), energy storage system (ESS), electric vehicle (EV), etc. A microgrid often contains an energy mix system that requires three control levels, namely primary, secondary and tertiary, to optimize the energy cost and behavior of the system operation and exploitation. Based on several DERs, a microgrid can operate in island mode or be connected to the main grid. The energy coordination for both features is to deal with the energy resources uncertainty, the climate impact, to reduce atmospheric pollution deriving from the conventional power grid, and the energy demand growth. Through the smart grid technology, the optimization approaches of this coordination have brought several improvements into the electrical system. Thus, an overview of an intelligent energy management system for microgrid applications is intensively detailed to structure the implementation strategies which aim to coordinate the energy flow of an electrical system optimally.

In order to attract more flexible resource to take part in integrated demand response (IDR), this can be realized by introducing load aggregator-based framework. In this paper, based on residential smart energy hubs (S.E. Hubs), a two-level IDR framework is proposed, in which S.E. Hub operators play the role of load aggregators. The framework includes day-ahead bidding and real-time scheduling. In day-ahead bidding, S.E. Hub operators have to compete dispatching amount for maximal profit; hence, noncooperative game approach is formulated to describe the competition behavior among operators. In real-time scheduling, the dispatching model is formulated to minimize the error between real-time scheduling amount and bidding amount. Moreover, in order to reduce the influence of IDR on residential users, 4 categories of users’ flexible loads are modeled according to load consumption characteristic, and then these models are considered as the constraints in real-time scheduling. A case study is designed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed two-level IDR framework. And simulation results confirm that smart grid, S.E. Hub operators, and residential users can benefit simultaneously.
