Bilaterales Paragangliom des Nervus vagus

Abstract: Paragangliomas are rare, usually benign tumours of the head and neck region, located along the cranial nerves and the big vessels. Vagus paraganglioma represents less than 3% of all cases of paragangliomas of the head and neck. Approximately 10% of vagus paragangliomas are presented as bilateral masses. We present the case of 75 year old female with bilateral paraganglioma, and papillary cancer of the thyroid gland at the time of diagnosis. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are discussed with special regar… Show more

“…If there is already a vagal nerve palsy due to the tumor or surgery, a contralateral carotid PG should be resected only in case of documented rapid growth. In multicentric disease, Boedeker [3] and Velegrakis et al [26] suggest removing the largest tumor. The remaining PGs can be observed or radiated depending on the function of the cranial nerves.…”

“…Patients with multifocal HNPs represent a special challenge [1], [18], [20], [59], [119], [120]. A one step surgery in subjects with bilateral HNPs is usually obsolete since it is bearing the risk of bilateral cranial nerve palsies resulting in severe disabilities [1], [18], [20], [59], [119], [120].…”
