Bilateral Temporal Arachnoid Cysts in Neurofibromatosis

Abstract: The occurrence of bilateral temporal arachnoid cysts has been considered as a rare event. Unilateral arachnoid pouches have been reported in a few instances associated with neurofibromatosis. The authors describe a 5-year-old girl with bilateral temporal arachnoid cysts who presented obvious stigmata of van Recklinghausen's disease. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that this association has been described in the literature.

“…However, some patients with neurofibromatosis were reported to have arachnoid cysts, and 1 patient with neurofibromatosis had bilateral temporal arachnoid cysts. 19 Based on these observations, which are compatible with cortical developmental abnormalities, we believe that genetic factors are responsible for this association. Knowledge of this patient's tuberous sclerosis complex gene mutation will not help to find the mechanism by which he developed the arachnoid cysts.…”

“…Among the intracranial space‐occupying lesions, the reported incidence of arachnoid cyst forms only 1%, and they are nearly always sporadic and single, although cysts are very rarely bilateral 10 . A few patients with neurofibromatosis were revealed to have arachnoid cysts and only one case with bilateral temporal arachnoid cysts, as in our second patient, was reported 5,9 . Also one with tuberous sclerosis complex was found to have the bilateral temporal arachnoid cysts 10 .…”
