Abstract:Sesamoid bones are partially or totally embedded in the substance of a corresponding tendon. Anatomically they are part of a gliding mechanism that reduces friction and protects the tendon. The sesamoid complex consists of seven muscles, eight ligaments, and two sesamoid bones and it´s pathological conditions include traumatic, degenerative, inflammatory, infectious, and ischemic processes.
