Bilateral oncocytoma of the parotid gland

Abstract: Oncocytic neoplasms are a group of rare tumours that mostly affect the parotid gland (80%), sometimes affect the submandibular gland (9%) and rarely affect the intraoral minor salivary glands. The incidence of oncocytic neoplasms represents approximately 1% of parotid neoplasms and bilateral presentation is very rare. Herein we describe a single case involving bilateral presentation of oncocytoma of the parotid glands.

“…They present as lobulated and mobile mass [3]. Bilateralism is observed in 7% of cases [7]. In the literature, we report a case of facial palsy associated to parotid oncocytoma, which was explained by ischemia and strangulation of the nerve secondary to tumoral inflammation [1].…”

“…About 80% of parotid tumors are benign and 64 to 80% of all primary salivary gland epithelial tumors involve the parotid gland, mostly located in the superficial lobe [5]. Oncocytic neoplasms comprise a group of rare tumours of the parotid glands, and their incidence represents approximately 1% of parotid neoplasms [1]. Histologically they are classified according to the new World Health Organization classification in three distinct types, namely oncocytosis, oncocytoma and oncocytic carcinoma [2].…”

“…Oncocytomas of the salivary glands are a group of rare tumors, more commonly seen in the parotid glands (80%), occasionally in the submandibular gland(9%) and rarely affect the intraoral minor salivary glands. [1,9] Oncocytoma are benign neoplasms constituting approximately 1.5% of all salivary gland tumors. [1,2] On review of literature, majority of cases favored an older population for this rarity, most often after the sixth decade.…”
