“…Cytomcgalically trans formed monocytes in choroidal vessels were seen by Bachmann et al [1] and antigens against CMV were localized in the choroid by Pepose et al [12], Retinitis is the most frequent ocular com plication of CMV infection, choroiditis by this virus is much rarer and in most cases remains clinically unrecognized. An exuda tive course [2] is unusual. Histologically, half of the cases with CMV retinitis show infil trates with inflammatory cells in the choroid [12], They are mostly composed of mononu clear cells [1, 3.…”

“…Mostly, only an aqueous flare, some circulating cells and small precipitates were present in the anterior chamber. Massive exudation in the anterior chamber [2] or a hypopyon [3] are exception al. All these patients w'ere infected by several opportunistic organisms.…”

“…[4][5][6] CMV retinitis has also been described in three cases associated with Wegener's granulomatosis, 7 rheumatoid arthritis 8 and Behcet's disease. 9 All were under chronic immunosuppression with cytotoxic drugs such as azathioprine, high-dose steroids, cyclophosphamide and adenine arabinosine. Unlike AIDS patients, these patients typically do not manifest any clinical symptoms of systemic CMV involvement despite the ocular manifestations.…”

“…Corticosteroids did not pro duce CMV shedding, and cytotoxic drugs produced CMV shedding only in some patients although all remained asymptomatic. One case has been reported of a 30-ycar-old patient who developed CMV panuveitis [16] with an immu nosuppressive dose o f corticosteroids (urine culture was positive for CMV, aqueous and intravitreal intracellular CMV antigen was detected). The clinical course was atyp ical in this case as the patient had bilateral exudative retinal detachment with minimal evidence of retinitis.…”
