Bilateral congenital anterior diaphragmatic hernia: a case report

Abstract: The anteromedial diaphragmatic hernias of Morgagni and Larrey are the least common defects that occur in this organ. Simultaneous occurrence has been described but remains an absolute rarity. We herein present a case of this bilateral herniation with a unique presentation. The paper refers to the basic anatomic, diagnostic and therapeutic considerations for this entity.

“…Unfortunately, there are no data to support this assumption. Physiologic consequences of MH are not always apparent, as illustrated by one patient who had resolution of refractory hypertension after repair of massive bilateral MH [42]. Slaetis [43], who published one of the larger series, was unable to make an association between the size of the hernia and symptoms.…”

“…Th e sequence of events implies herniation of abdominal organs through the existing diaphragmatic gap. Symptomatic Morgagni hernia cases in adults are rare and mostly described as respiratory problems or unclear abdominal pain [13][14][15][16] . Hernial content may be omentum, small and large intestine, or stomach 6 .…”

“…Whether right-side CDH is associated with higher rates of malformations is also debatable (Skari, et al, 2000;Bedoyan et al, 2004;Hedrick et al, 2004). When the defect is bilateral, associated anomalies (Neville et al, 2003;Ninos et al, 2006) and mortality (Neville et al, 2003) are significantly increased.…”
