Bilateral aberrant origin of the inferior thyroid artery from the common carotid artery

Abstract: The thyroid gland is mainly supplied by the superior and inferior thyroid arteries, with the latter being its principal arterial supply in adults. The inferior thyroid artery usually arises from the thyrocervical trunk, and less frequently from the subclavian artery. Rarely, it may originate from the vertebral artery or the common carotid artery. In the present report, we describe a unique case of a 56-year-old patient, undergoing total thyroidectomy and level VI lymph node dissection for papillary thyroid car… Show more

“…Inferior thyroid artery arises from the thyrocervical trunk although exceptional origins from vertebral, subclavian or common carotid arteries have been reported (4,5). Inferior thyroid artery descends on the posterior surface of the lateral lobe and gives two branches; anterior and posterior, before entering the thyroid (4) to supply mainly the inferior third of thyroid parenchyma (6).…”

“…Regarding the ITA, and referring to the existing literature, there are more examples of anatomical variants than the STA, discovered by non-invasive techniques, cadaver dissection or during surgical intervention. The knowledge of the ITA's anatomical variants is essential for its relationship with the laryngeal nerve: it may be absent, present as an ancillary (accessory) ITA, and appearing double or originate at different levels [20], and as reported in the studies described in Table 5, even if the most common origin of the ITA is the thyrocervical trunk (TCT), it can also originate from other vessels such as the CCA, the subclavian artery (SA), the vertebral artery (VA) or the suprascapular artery (SSA) [20,25,[35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42].…”
