Big Data: Some Ethical Concerns for the Social Sciences

Abstract: While big data (BD) has been around for a while now, the social sciences have been comparatively cautious in its adoption for research purposes. This article briefly discusses the scope and variety of BD, and its research potential and ethical implications for the social sciences and sociology, which derive from these characteristics. For example, BD allows for the analysis of actual (online) behavior and the analysis of networks on a grand scale. The sheer volume and variety of data allow for the detection of… Show more

“…This framework provides a comprehensive approach to addressing ethical issues in big data research, particularly those related to methodological biases, data availability, and individual and social harms. Weinhardt (2021) discusses the ethical concerns of big data in the social sciences, highlighting its research potential and the implications arising from its characteristics. The paper points out that while big data allows for the analysis of actual behavior and networks on a grand scale, it also raises ethical issues such as the need for documentation and dissemination of methods, data, and results, the challenges of anonymization and re-identification, and the ability of stakeholders to handle ethical issues.…”

“…However, anonymization is a purely technical solution that constantly needs to be improved (Malle et al, 2016). The rapid growth of the number of open data sets on the Internet is a big problem for data anonymization, because it makes it possible to link different data sources, due to which the risk of re‐identification of persons increases significantly (Weinhardt, 2021). Of course, in accordance with the best practices of open science, researchers share their data under the terms of appropriate open licences, and other researchers must use these research data exclusively for research purposes (Gomez‐Diaz & Recio, 2020).…”
