Blockchain is a disruptive technology that is revolutionizing information technology and represents a change of cultural paradigm for the way in which information is shared. Companies are rushing to understand how they can use blockchain distributed ledger technology to innovate processes, products and transactions. In a globalized world where environmental sustainability is a critical success factor, what is the role of the blockchain? By using a systematic review approach and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol, this study attempts to identify whether and how blockchain technology is considered able to affect environmental sustainability. Findings from 195 studies from 2015 to 2020 were analysed after the search protocol was applied. The results indicate that blockchain technology could contribute to environmentally sustainable development goals (SDGs) from different points of view, such as supporting the realization of a sustainable supply chain, improving energy efficiency and promoting the creation of secure and reliable smart cities. Furthermore, the investigation highlights the sectors where to focus research investments, providing a way to reward sustainable behaviour and increasing environmental sustainability. On the other hand, blockchain has no negligible negative effects on the environment that need to be considered before adoption.

Effective use of Big Data can significantly support the development of smart cities and the new digital economy. The aim of the article is a multi-criteria evaluation of IT systems in terms of Big Data processing, taking into account the support for the development of smart cities. The article includes theoretical and empirical research. The adopted criteria for assessing the architecture of IT systems relate to barriers to the implementation of the digital economy in smart cities and the guidelines of international data strategies. The evaluation covered, among other things, cybersecurity and the effectiveness of organizing, storing, and producing new information. The research results allowed us to identify the key factors of Big Data processing efficiency. Based on the research results, an effective model of Big Data processing in organizations was developed. In particular, various data models were analyzed as one of the main elements of software architecture of information systems. The research also focused on data processing techniques such as data warehousing, machine learning, and distributed computing. The efficiency factors of IT systems identified in the research reduce barriers to developing global data strategies and smart cities.

Food waste is a global problem, one that has moved up the public and political agenda in recent years. Food is at the core of the United Nations' (UN) 'Sustainable Development Goals'. Food waste prevention is also highlighted as a priority area in the '2015 Circular Economy Package'. Food waste is an important indicator of sustainability because it embodies the sum of resources being used to produce uneaten food, and food waste disposal has an environmental, economic, and social impact. Directive 2018/851 established amendments to the food waste regulatory regime, including the definition of a food waste category and general provisions, which were related to food waste, providing a strong emphasis on waste prevention and the reporting of data in connection with food waste. New EU food waste rules should be implemented at the national level. Comparative research is needed for identifying any potential implementation problems. Such research will be carried out using case studies of Poland and Lithuania.
