Big data: Hell or heaven? Digital platforms and market power in the data-driven economy

Abstract: Digital transformation has triggered a process of concentration in several markets for information goods with digital platforms rising to dominate key industries by leveraging on network externalities and economies of scale in the use of consumer data. The policy debate, therefore, focuses on the market control allegedly held by incumbents who build their competitive advantage on big data. In this paper, we evaluate the risk of abuse of a dominant position by analysing three major aspects highlighted in econom… Show more

“…In these studies, attention has been placed on understanding how different types of data represent a source of competitive advantage, an issue that has been tackled only marginally in the research investigating IoT-enabled business models in manufacturing. The third and last stream is also related to the data issue, where some studies have also investigated emerging business models and concentration dynamics of technology providers in the IoT (Metallo et al, 2018;Basaure et al, 2020) and in the big data industries (e.g., Urbinati et al, 2019;Nuccio and Guerzoni, 2019).…”

“…All the latter can be called digital intelligence because they rely on machine learning algorithms and it is digital intelligence that can be monetized. It is not the access to data itself that raises entry barriers and gains market power (Nuccio and Guerzoni 2019). Big data needs to be centralized and processed in such a way that their use triggers multiple successive innovations (Fourcade and Healy 2016).…”
