Big Data and IoT for Chronic Patients Monitoring

Abstract: Recent data of the European Union reveals that the main chronic pathologies are the Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), the main cause of death in Europe, and respiratory diseases, specially the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Each year CVD causes over 4 million deaths in Europe alone and over 1.9 million deaths in the European Union (EU). According to the WHO (World Health Organization), in 2030 COPD will be the third leading cause of death, and the first cause of sanitary costs in Europe, due to the … Show more

“…Yujun et al proposed a four-layered big health application, system supported by IoHT and big data, for remote disease diagnosis, smart clothing based healthcare, LTE assisted telemedicine, and robotic interactions [53]. Similar frameworks include: monitoring systems for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases through IoT sensors [54], mobile healthcare systems for patient monitoring using big data analytics applied on sensor data [55], [56], heterogeneous healthcare big data analytics system for decision making in risk management and patient care [57]. The cloud can also be deployed to process and manage the IoT data online [58], [59].…”

“…Intelligent transportation is the need for the future vehicular communications, which simplifies data gathering, its execution, distribution, and exploration for travelers. In healthcare, the use of IoT devices plays an important role, ranging from the primary investigation of patients [80] to the operation theater (OT) [81], [82]. Heterogeneous IoT has stimulated the improvement of wearable smart devices [83] and revealed a new trend of mobile health.…”
