Big Data Analytics (BDA) has the potential to transform business models, firms and the competitive landscape. Though, creating value from BDA investments seems challenging as many technical and managerial challenges are involved. Due to its complexity, the value generated from big data depends on how well a firm's Big Data Analytics Capability (BDAC) is developed. Drawing on the Resource Based View (RBV), the IT business value approach and the BDAC literature, we study the relationship between a firm's BDAC and the realization of a competitive advantage. We used survey data from multiple respondents per firm (i.e. IT managers and Business managers) in 112 Belgian and Dutch firms. Using PLS-SEM, we found a direct relationship between a firm's BDAC and the perceived realization of a competitive advantage. We also found a partial mediation of this relationship via the performance of the firm's operation management process.

This study intends to provide scholars and practitioners with an understanding of human resource challenges in the context of Big Data Analytics (BDA). This paper provides a holistic framework of human-related capabilities that organizations must consider when implementing BDA to facilitate decision-making. For this purpose, the authors conducted a systematic literature review adapted from Tranfield et al. (BJM 14:207–222, 2003) to identify relevant studies. The 75 publications reviewed provided the sample for an inductive, and systematic data evaluation following the well-known and accepted approach introduced by Gioia et al. (ORM 16:15–31, 2012). The comprehensive review uncovered 33 first-order concepts linked to human-related capabilities, which were distilled into 15 s-order themes and then merged into five aggregated dimensions: Personnel Capability, Management Capability, Organizational Capability, Culture and Governance Capability, and Strategy and Planning Capability. The study is, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the first to categorize all relevant human-related capabilities for successful BDA application. As such, it not only provides the scientific basis for further research, but also serves as a useful overview of the critical factors for BDA use in decision-making processes.

Big data is one of the promising technologies which helps the healthcare sector improve patient experience, reduce the cost of treatment, predict epidemics, and provide competitive healthcare services. This research aims to study and analyse big data architecture for a public hospital in Thailand.Study design/methodology/approach: This research employs a qualitative approach. For data collection and analysis, document analysis is applied as a qualitative method to obtain empirical data. In addition, in-depth interviews of the IT manager, doctor, and staff are conducted to confirm the big data architecture and examine issues in a case study public hospital.Findings: According to the study, big data architecture for the public hospital comprises data acquisition, data integration, data analytics, data visualisation, a health data centre on a cloud, and data governance.Originality/value: The architecture components and analysis can be applied as a guideline for big data processing and analytics to create a solution for implementing big data in healthcare effectively.
