“…2.3 Antibiofilm activity of nanomaterials 2.3 Antimicrobial Models for Nanomaterials Evaluation evaluation of biocidal activity, various methodologies have been used, such as those proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and European Standards (EN) for evaluation of bactericidal, fungicidal, parasiticidal, and virucidal activity (Bloomfield et al 2017;Malone et al 2017;Soltani and Pouypouy 2019); these protocols are developed to determine the ability of a chemical or microorganisms to destroy and control harmful organisms for use in medicine, agriculture, and industry (Chattopadhyay et al 2017;Parmar et al 2017;Allah et al 2019). Unfortunately, the methodologies to determine the biocidal activity continue with the problem of their visual reading and their techniques not robust or automated, so they have tried to apply fluorescent methods and flow cytometry in order to reduce these disadvantages but still without an approved protocol for global use (Tidwell et al 2015;de Souza et al 2016;Helmi et al 2018;Vanhauteghem et al 2019). A similar situation was the protocol for the evaluation of biofilms that despite having approved methodologies to evaluate both static biofilms using the MBEC assay (ASTM E2799) and inflow using CDC biofilm reactor (ASTM E2562), the automation of these tests to make them more reproducible and robust is still far from being a reality (Gazzola et al 2015;Kerstens et al 2015;Larimer et al 2016;Bogachev et al 2018).…”
