Bidirectional Associations between the Negative Emotionality of 0-to 3-year-old Children and Maternal Warmth / Reactivity

The primary purpose of this study is to examine transactional relationships among children's negative emotionality, mothers' depression, and parenting behavior using the autoregressive cross-lagged model. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2nd (T1) through 4th (T3) wave (2009-2011) of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC). A total of 1,535 mothers of 1-to 3-year-old children participated in this study. Results: First, mothers' parenting behavior at T1 and T2 had significant effects on children's negative emotionality at T2 and T3, respectively, whereas children's negative emotionality did not predict the mothers' parenting behavior. Second, transactional relationships were confirmed between mothers' depression and parenting behavior from T1 to T3. Third, transactional relationships were found between children's negative emotionality and mothers' depression from T1 to T3. Lastly, children's negative emotionality at T1 and parenting behavior at T3 were mediated by mothers' depression at T2. Conclusion: The present study found that the parent effects in the relationship between children's negative emotionality and mothers' parenting behaviors, and identified the transactional relationships between children's negative emotionality and maternal depression, as well as between maternal depression and parenting behavior in early years of life.

Longitudinal Study on Transactional and Mediational Relationships Between Mothers’ Happiness, Parenting Behaviors, and Children’s Happiness: Focus on the Transition from Kindergarten to Elementary School

Objectives:The main purpose of this study was to explore longitudinal transactional and mediational relationships between mothers' happiness, parenting behaviors, and children's happiness during the transition from kindergarten to elementary school. Methods: This study used data from the 7th (T1) through 9th (T3) wave (2014)(2015)(2016) of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC). Participants of this study were 1,302 mothers and their children, aged 6 to 8 years old. Data analysis was performed using autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. Results: First, the longitudinal transactional relationship was confirmed among mothers' happiness, maternal warmth, and children's happiness. Second, the longitudinal relationship between children's happiness at T1 and mothers' happiness at T3 was mediated by maternal warmth at T2. Finally, the longitudinal relationship between maternal warmth at T1 and mothers' happiness at T3 was mediated by children's happiness at T2. Conclusion:This study revealed longitudinal effects of transactional and mediational relationships on children, as well as on parents, in the transition period from kindergarten to elementary school. This finding highlighted the need for interventions to promote happiness of children at a familial level.

The Effects of Negative Emotionality and Mother’s Social Parenting during Infancy on Peer Interaction at Age 3：A Longitudinal Study Using Latent Growth Modeling

The purpose of the present study was to examine the trajectories of children's negative emotionality and mother's social parenting over a 3-year period (for children at ages 1-3) and to then analyze the bidirectional effects between the two variables. The longitudinal casual relationship among children's negative emotionality, mother's social parenting and peer interaction at age 3 was also examined. The data, taken from the Panel Study on Korean Children, were analyzed using latent growth modeling. The results were as follows. First, the level of negative emotionality was seen to have increased by 2 years of age, whereas the level of mother's social parenting decreased by this point. Second, higher initial negative emotionality predicted decreases in mother's social parenting, However, higher initial mother's social parenting predicted increases in children's negative emotionality.
