Regional and international research collaboration and citation impact in selected sub-Saharan African countries in the period 2000 to 2019

Purpose This paper aims to examine and compares the extent and types of research collaboration and their citation impact in selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa using co-authorship amongst countries as a proxy indicator. Design/methodology/approach The paper reports the findings of a bibliometric study of publications that were published by authors affiliated to Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania, between 2000 and 2019 and indexed in the Web of Science’s (WoS) three citation indexes. The social network analysis technique was adopted to articulate collaborative partnerships between and amongst geographical regions. Correlational tests were conducted to gauge the relationship between the frequency and intensity of collaboration and the influence of collaboration on citation impact. The paper highlights the characteristics of country collaborations, the nature of collaboration and the corresponding research impact and relates the types of collaboration to citation impacts in each country. Findings The findings reveal that Nigeria and Kenya have had wider and stronger collaborations than Ethiopia, Ghana and Tanzania; the number of collaborating countries has continued to grow in the five countries’ research ecosystems; there are statistically significant relationships between collaboration and citation impact in each country; international collaboration has yielded the most number of citations, with the global North performing better than the South and regional countries; and that the number of citations for the countries more than doubles through research collaboration. Research limitations/implications Co-authorship of publications has been faulted but remains the most reliable proxy indicator of research collaboration. The study of the five countries, though depicting patterns of collaboration in many sub-Saharan African countries, cannot be generalised to the entire region. Practical implications The current study has policy implications as far as decisions on research collaboration are concerned. Sub-Saharan African countries and indeed the developing countries may consider re-examining their emphasis on international collaboration to the neglect of domestic and regional collaboration. While the study supports international collaboration, it nevertheless recommends a three-tier collaboration, wherein international collaboration is juxtaposed with domestic and/or regional collaboration. Originality/value The study uses social network analysis of country collaboration in developing countries. The intensity and frequency of collaboration are examined in relation to research impact.

This study draws on publication and citation data related to plant biotechnology from a 10-year (2004-2013) period to assess the research performance, impact, and collaboration of member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Plant biotechnology is one of the main areas of cooperation between ASEAN member states and among the research areas promoted to achieve regional food security and sustainable development. In general, findings indicate increased scientific output, influence, and overall collaboration of ASEAN countries in plant biotechnology over time. Research performance and collaboration (domestic, regional, and international) of the region in plant biotechnology are linked to the status of the economic development of each member country. Thailand produced the most publications of the ASEAN member states while Singapore had the highest influence as indicated by its citation activity in plant biotechnology among the ASEAN countries. Domestic and international collaborations on plant biotechnology are numerous. Regional collaboration or partnership among ASEAN countries was, however, was found to be very limited, which is a concern for the region's goal of economic integration and science and technology cooperation. More studies using bibliometric data analysis need to be conducted to understand plant biotechnology cooperation and knowledge flows between ASEAN countries.

The improvement of content society with the increasing internet literacy encourages the development of online media portal in Indonesia. Online news portal in Indonesia is at national or local scale in general, throughout the geographical area in Indonesia, which still shows a disparity in the infrastructure of access to the internet. The purpose of this research are evaluate content richness and rankings of web traffic using search engines. Research using a quantitative approach based on data from search engines, this study also uses a qualitative approach to analyse the evolution of the homepage design and navigation structure starting from the site launched. This research explores 140 online media in Indonesia using the webometrics analysis. The difference in the kind of mass media shows that mass media with online media only owns more content or content richness, compared with a hybrid mass media (media with online and printed versions). There is a significant difference in content richness and traffic between national and regional online news portals, outside Java in particular. Another finding from the webometrics analysis is that global ranking and content richness between Java and outside Java show a highly significant difference based on the statistical test. Discriminant analysis shows the result that content richness and website ranking are the factors to predict the performance of online mass media based on its location. The main implication of this research is the need for management and editor of online news portal to design a website which is friendlier to the search engine and to improve news productivity with the quality content.
