A review on fault-tolerant control (FTC) for near space vehicle (NSV) is presented. First, the concept of near space is introduced, the background of NSV is emphasized, and the model characteristics of NSV in faulty case are investigated. Then, a comparison of different existing approaches is briefly carried out, and achievements on the current research in this field are also presented in the view of the practical application. Furthermore, several existing advanced FTC results for nonlinear flight control systems are given. Finally, the recent literature of NSV are presented to provide an overall view of future developments in this area.

This paper presents a fault detection, diagnosis, and reconfiguration method based on support vector machines. This method is appropriate for certain or predetermined faults and involves a fault detection and diagnosis unit and an online controller selection type reconfiguration mechanism. In this method, when a fault is detected and diagnosed by the fault detection and diagnosis unit, a suitable controller, which has been determined via an optimization algorithm in an off-line fashion, is activated to maintain proper closed-loop performance of the system in an on-line manner. In the detection, diagnosis, and reconfiguration stages of the method, support vector classification and regression machines are used and the performance is tested on a simulation model of a two-tank level control system for various fault scenarios.

Fault Tolerant Control of affine class of MIMO non-linear systems have not received considerable attention of researchers compared to other class of non-linear systems. Therefore, this paper proposes an adaptive passive fault tolerant control method for actuator faults of affine class of MIMO nonlinear systems with uncertainties using sliding mode control. The actuator fault is represented by a multiplicative factor of the control signal which reflects the loss of actuator effectiveness. The design of the controller is based on the assumption that the maximum loss level of the actuator effectiveness is known. Further, since the proposed controller is adaptive, it does not require any a priori knowledge of the uncertainty bounds. The closed loop stability conditions of the controller are derived based on Lyapunov theory. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated considering an example of a two degree of freedom helicopter and has been found to be satisfactory.
