Biased biological functions of horizontally transferred genes in prokaryotic genomes

Abstract: Horizontal gene transfer is one of the main mechanisms contributing to microbial genome diversification 1-3 . To clarify the overall picture of interspecific gene flow among prokaryotes, we developed a new method for detecting horizontally transferred genes and their possible donors by Bayesian inference with training models for nucleotide composition. Our method gives the average posterior probability (horizontal transfer index) for each gene sequence, with a low horizontal transfer index indicating recent ho… Show more

“…HGT of genetic material represents a substantial source of novel genetic information in prokaryotes (110,111). Notably, the uptake of foreign genes along with their establishment and maintenance are often biased toward the acquisition of traits that contribute directly to the fitness of the bacteria, such as virulence or resistance to toxins (112,113). The horizontal transfer of DNA occurs in prokaryotes via transduction, transformation, or conjugation.…”

“…Several studies suggest that gene transfer could effectively be more frequent for short and intermediate evolutionary distances but uncommon between organisms that are separated by large evolutionary time frames (Ochman et al 2000;Brugger et al 2002;Nakamura et Dagan et al 2008). A recent study (Wagner & De la Chaux 2008) has analysed the evolution of 2091 insertion sequences in 438 completely sequenced prokaryotic genomes and found only 30 cases of presumed transfer events among distantly related clades.…”

“…7). HGT occurs within and between all three domains of life, and it has been estimated that 0.05-80% of genes in bacterial and archaeal genomes have been affected by HGT, depending on the analytical method used and the genome analysed [8][9][10] . Although HGT is widespread, it is not random: patterns of preferential gene exchange among specific groups of organisms that share ancestry or habitat have been * Present address.…”
