Bi2Se3 nanoplates for contrast-enhanced photoacoustic imaging at 1064 nm

Abstract: Bi2Se3 nanoplates can be a promising PA contrast agent at 1064 nm that offers a high optical absorbance in the second NIR region providing a high contrast imaging and increased depth of penetration.

“…2d). 49 An in vitro experiment showed that an imaging depth up to 4.6 cm, and an in vivo experiment verified the clinical feasibility of Bi 2 Se 3 nanoagents by PAI of the bladder, gastrointestinal tract, and sentinel lymph nodes in mice. Copper sulphide (CuS)-based nanoparticles are promising nanoagents due to their negligible toxicity, excellent NIR-II absorption, and efficient biodegradability.…”

“…Using near-infrared (NIR) light can extend the maximum imaging depth because biological tissues pose relatively less optical attenuation in this wavelength range [56]. Particularly, the second NIR window (NIR II; ˜1000 nm – 1350 nm) gains great attention because hemoglobin absorption is much lower and tissue scattering is much less compared to those in the first NIR window (NIR I; ˜700 nm – 950 nm) [57]. Further, according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the maximum permissible energy for skin allowed in the NIR-II window is higher than the VIS and NIR-I optical ranges [58,59].…”

“…[110][111][112][113][114][115] The PA signal generated by NIR-II wavelengths is weak and hence effective contrast agents are often necessary for enhancing the image contrast. With the increasing demonstrations on the advantages of PAI, efforts are made to develop strong NIR-II absorbing organic, 37,[116][117][118] inorganic, [119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126] etc. Although, these nanoparticles show broad absorption spectrum in the NIR-II window, most of them are demonstrated for PAI at 1064-nm wavelength because 1064-nm nanosecond laser (Nd:YAG laser) is commercially available.…”
