Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.4 and 0.45): X-ray Single-Crystal and Electron Microscopy Study

Abstract: The superstructure of Bi 1-x Ca x MnO 3 (x ) 0.4 or 0.45), which exhibits a charge/orbital-ordered state at room temperature (T CO ≈ 330 K), has been successfully determined at different temperatures using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and the superspace formalism. This peculiar approach provides a very convenient way to analyze all possible 3D symmetry (P2 1 /m, Pm, and Pnm2 1 ) of the superstructure. The structural model of the ordered state has been confirmed thanks to complementary data from severa… Show more

“…The melt was cooled from 1150 °C to 900 °C at a relatively quick rate of 90 °C per hour, whereupon the furnace was turned off and allowed to cool to ambient temperature. Crystals of Bi x Ca y MnO 3 ( x =0.55, y =0.45; x =0.60, y =0.40)51 were successfully grown out of a Bi 2 O 3 flux at 1094 °C, which was slow cooled at 4 °C per hour to room temperature. Large cubic crystals with edges of up to 5 mm were isolated following removal of the flux using hot HNO 3 .…”
