“…All the species caught in the Trasimeno Lake had been previously analyzed for PBDEs and HBCDs (Tavoloni et al, 2021), and the here presented results confirmed that C. auratus, P. fluviatilis, and P. clarkii are mostly not contaminated from these BFRs. In A. Anguilla, lower levels were measured in this study in respect to what previously reported with the 10 PBDEs, ranging between 62 and 299 pg/g, whereas the 15 PBDEs measured by Tavoloni et al (2021) was between 265 and 912 pg/g. As shown in Supplementary Table 5, the sum of the 15 BDE congeners and of the 10 indicators is coincident, confirming that the 10 indicators account for the large part of BDE contamination.…”

“…Previously published studies reported similar PBDE profiles in A. anguilla, justifying the high BDE47/BDE99 ratio (>15) as a result of (i) different assimilation efficiencies, (ii) eels metabolic pathways leading to bio-transformation of BDE-99 into−47 or (iii) specific elimination metabolism in eel for the BDE99 congener (Malarvannan et al, 2014;Couderc et al, 2015). Moreover, in this study, A. anguilla samples also exhibited the BDE 209 which was never above LOQ in the paper from Tavoloni et al (2021).…”

“…Adults are recommended to eat 2 or 3 servings (1 serving = 4 ounces) a week from the “Best Choices” list and children (at age 2) are limited to a serving (1 ounce) ( USDHHS/USDA, 2015 ). Despite the nutritional benefits from crayfish, they accumulate essential and non-essential elements and organic pollutants ( Mancinelli et al., 2018 ; Tavoloni et al., 2021 ). Consequently, seafood presents potential risks to consumers since the dietary pathway is the major exposure route.…”

“…Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), tetrabromobisphenol A, and DBDPE have been listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention, and their use has been restricted or even banned. Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely used as substitutes for BFRs for various home and office applications (Tavoloni et al 2020;Mao et al 2020;Chen et al 2019;Yu et al 2019). OPFRs are mainly found in building materials, such as rigid polyurethane foam for insulation, construction, and refrigeration (Yang et al 2017), flexible polyurethane foams, plastics, clothing, and textiles for interior upholstery such as furniture and mattresses (Zhou et al 2019;Ospina et al 2018), electronic products and a few baby products (Wang et al 2020;Wiersielis et al 2020).…”
