Abstract: Traditional medical partnerships were designed to operate in a stable unchanging environment. It is clear that the next five years will be neither stable nor unchanging within primary health and community care. General practitioners for the first time are operating within a managed health service, and the autonomy they once had to determine their administrative routines is rapidly disappearing. These changes will inevitably challenge the organisational structures currently found in general practice.
