Beyond proximity: Consequentialist Ethics and System Dynamics

Abstract: <p>Consequentialism is a moral philosophy that maintains that the moral worth of an action is determined by the consequences it has for the welfare of a society. Consequences of model design are a part of the model lifecycle that is often neglected. This paper investigates the issue using system dynamics modeling as an example. Since a system dynamics model is a product of the modeler’s design decisions, the modeler should consider the life cycle consequences of using the model. Seen from a consequential… Show more

“…Some texts approach computer simulation relying on particular ethical accounts. Palmer (2017), for example, explicitly reframes the model evaluation process within consequentialist ethics. Others incorporate ethics more narrowly through specific morally relevant concepts e.…”

“…The modeller has a duty to reflect on how their model may be mobilised for political aims in a manner that has adverse consequences (Palmer 2017). This is particularly pertinent for the work presented here which deals with sensitive issues, such as migration in an abstract manner, devoid of the human context.…”
