Beyond Lesbian and Gay

Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the themes that psychotherapists should be aware of when working with bisexual, transgender, polyamorous, and kinky clients. The author describes her experiences in creating a thriving practice where people from diverse sexual subcultures feel welcomed and “seen.” This chapter describes the challenges and joys that are inherent in small community work where personal, political, and professional milieus intersect. The author discusses how to develop this type of niche practice. A list of resources is given for readers who are seeking more in-depth training in these areas.
