Beyond Insoluble Dietary Fiber: Bioactive Compounds in Plant Foods

Madeline Timm,
Lisa C. Offringa,
B. Jan-Willem Van Klinken
et al.

Abstract: Consumption of plant foods, including whole grains, vegetables, fruits, pulses, nuts, and seeds, is linked to improved health outcomes. Dietary fiber is a nutrient in plant foods that is associated with improved health outcomes, including a lower risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Different fibers deliver different health benefits based on their physiochemical properties (solubility, viscosity) and physiological effects (fermentability). Additionally,… Show more

“…Nonetheless, fibres, both soluble and insoluble, contribute to local gut health and systemic overall health through various mechanisms [ 82 , 83 , 84 ]. It is important to note that some reviews have already hypothesized that dietary fibres may help to prime the gut for increased gut microbiome resilience, and that the incorporation of dietary fibres into daily nutrition is crucial for maintaining a balanced gut microbiota, optimizing intestinal physiology, and mitigating the risk of various systemic diseases [ 15 ].…”
