Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine and review tayyiban indicators in the context of halal food production. In Islam, food produced or manufactured must be halal and tayyiban. Even though both halal and tayyiban are always mentioned together in the Quran, the halal aspect is highlighted more than tayyiban. The discussion of tayyiban’s indicators is still vague. Design/methodology/approach The study was adopted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for the review of the current research which used two main journal databases, namely, Web of Science and Scopus. Accordingly, the search resulted in a total of 40 articles that can be systematically examined. Findings The results of review of these articles formulated five main themes: safety, nutrition, cleanliness, quality and authenticity. These five indicators are considered relevant enough in the context of halal food production to build a comprehensive tayyiban concept. Originality/value This study enriches the field of halal food research. The concept of tayyiban as a whole has been given limited attention in academic literature. At the end of this study, a number of recommendations are suggested for the reference of future scholars.

Guaranteed halal products in Indonesia have been equipped with adequate regulatory tools, starting from the Law to the Regulation of the Minister of Religious Affairs. Unfortunately, the halal certification process has not been running as it should be. The growing public awareness of halal and business actors’ enthusiasm regarding halal certificates did not appear to be supported by the organization’s readiness and good halal governance. This study aims to determine the developing map and trend of halal certification published by reputable journals. The data were analyzed from more than 55 indexed research publications. The export data is then processed and analyzed using the R Biblioshiny application program to determine the bibliometric map of halal certification research. The result shows that the number of publications on the development of halal certification in Indonesia has increased significantly. The most popular keyword topics are halal, product, and Indonesia. Based on the literature, there are at least 4 aspects of the problem of implementing halal certification in Indonesia, namely: infrastructure aspect, technical, regulatory and inter-relational aspects.

Sustainable agriculture is an ecological approach to unravelling essential issues related to food production. Biotechnology, in particular, the genetic modification (GM) technology, is considered one way to sustain food security. Farmers, the main actors in modern agriculture, have always been absent in the debates involving GM technology, giving rise to whether their rights are at the forefront when debating these issues. Ethical principles serve as criteria for evaluating policies' practices concerning technology. This paper, therefore, discusses the principles of ethical indicators and guidelines for releasing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the environment to protect Malaysian farmers. Applying the qualitative research method, a systematic literature review of secondary sources on genetically modified (GM) crops from socio-economic, politic, institutional, social, cultural, safety, religious, common and morality as well as environmental effects are analysed to consolidate the evidence in developing the potential ethical indicators to protect farmers' rights.
