Beyond Extracellular Vesicles: Hybrid Membrane Nanovesicles as Emerging Advanced Tools for Biomedical Applications

Meng Sun,
Jiani Yang,
Yueyun Fan
et al.

Abstract: Extracellular vesicles (EVs), involved in essential physiological and pathological processes of the organism, have emerged as powerful tools for disease treatment owing to their unique natural biological characteristics and artificially acquired advantages. However, the limited targeting ability, insufficient production yield, and low drug‐loading capability of natural simplex EVs have greatly hindered their development in clinical translation. Therefore, the establishment of multifunctional hybrid membrane na… Show more

“…In addition to protein molecules, sphingosine-1-phosphate, prostaglandin E2, and serotonin are also involved in the regulation of LR ( Ding et al, 2016 ; He et al, 2019 ; Cheng et al, 2021 ). Extracellular vesicles represent another form of mediating communication between cells ( Brandel et al, 2022 ), and due to their accessibility, extracellular vesicles have become an important approach for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases ( Sun et al, 2023 ). After liver resection, extracellular vesicles produced by hepatocytes can stimulate the production of neutrophils and release cytokines such as HGF, promoting LR ( Brandel et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Based on similarity-miscibility theory, this similarity suggests feasibility for membrane fusion between liposomes and NK-EVs. The integration of NK-EVs with liposomes offers a “1 + 1 > 2” synergistic effect. , This not only compensates for the limited drug loading capacity and uncontrollable drug loading process of exosomes but also endows the hybrid liposomes with the active targeting function of EVs, enabling BBB and BBTB traversal. Subsequently, drug release occurs, enhancing nanoparticle penetration into tumor tissues and minimizing cytotoxic effects and hypersensitivity reactions associated with liposomes.…”
