Beyond Demonstrators—tackling fundamental problems in amplifying nature-based solutions for the post-COVID-19 world

Abstract: Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are currently promoted as a panacea for improving human-nature relations. Yet the way of amplifying and mainstreaming NbS beyond scientific demonstrator projects into policy contexts is still bearing shortcomings, in particular in the uncertain futures of a post-COVID-19 world. Successful NbS amplification may be achieved by (1) using multi-scalar action to balance differing interests and reconcile governance levels, (2) providing financial and other institutionalized incentives an… Show more

“…This type is similar to initiatives involving technical knowledge and instrumental values in the typology by Topp et al (2021). Lastly, the multi-scale co-production type considers changes in interactions between sectors and within the research-policy-action sphere, previously illustrated in inclusive social-ecological decision-making and transdisciplinary initiatives (36,46). Despite its similarity with previously identified typologies, our types do not absolutely discriminate decision-making contexts depending on whether they were led by bottom-up or top-down approaches (36,74).…”

“…Transdisciplinary research projects are therefore needed to bridge institutions and to co-produce knowledge with and for local communities (126), as well as public institutions to disseminate academic knowledge in an actionable way for stakeholders, e.g., through knowledge hubs or living labs (127). Knowledge hubs are also essential for multiplying local initiatives and sharing experiences without being considered as non-standard cases, pilot projects, or on the margins (46). Societal mindset and worldviews were strong motivations to NbS implementation.…”

“…Despite progressing through the codesign stages until its implementation, the prototype failed to become a permanent element managed by the local actor constellation. Nevertheless, the transdisciplinary and collaborative planning, design, implementation, and experimental operation of the prototype resulted in important insights for future replication, promotion, and implementation of GI [38], [40], [41]. An appropriate and effective post-implementation evaluation of this transdisciplinary GI prototyping experience enables a systematic analysis of the co-design process, to synthesize derived lessons learned to provide assessment guidance and to identify drivers governing research action in real-world scenarios.…”
