Despite the emphasis on evidence‐based treatment for psychological disorders, to date, there has been limited research examining treatment for nine of the 10 categorical personality disorders in DSM‐5 Section 2. This is perhaps not surprising given the complex heterogeneity and co‐morbidity within personality pathology. The hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology (HiTOP) was proposed to address limitations within the traditional categorical model of the diagnostic system. Within this system are five spectra: detachment, antagonistic externalizing, disinhibited externalizing, thought disorder and internalizing. These foundational personality traits potentially have direct and specific treatment implications. The purpose of this paper is to highlight potential psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatment recommendations within the personality spectra. Additionally, we outline the advantages of considering the personality science found within dimensional models of psychopathology in clinical assessment and intervention to aid in treatment planning. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Öz Diyalektik Davranış Terapisi® üçüncü dalga terapilerin içinde yer alan ve kanıta dayalı önemli yaklaşımlardan biridir. Diyalektik felsefe odağında kabul kavramı üzerinde duran bu yaklaşım, bireysel terapinin yanı sıra temel beceri eğitimleri yoluyla danışanın kabul ve değişim sürecine yardımcı olmayı amaçlar. Beceri eğitimleri mindfulness (bilinçli farkındalık), kişilerarası etkililik, duygu düzenleme ve sıkıntıya toleransı artırma olmak üzere dört modülden oluşur. Bu yazının temel amacı diyalektik davranış terapisini tanıtmak ve bu kanıta dayalı terapi modelinin öne çıkan araştırma bulgularını özetlerken bu yaklaşımın sunduğu beceri eğitiminin etkin bir müdahale yöntemi olarak kullanımının yanı sıra koruyucu ruh sağlığındaki kullanımına da dikkat çekmektir.

Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy to Self‐Harm in College‐Age Men: A Case Study

Researchers suggest an increase in self-harm among men. Specifically, college-age men appear to be at risk for self-harming behaviors, and counselors often overlook these behaviors in treatment. In this article, the authors describe the issue of self-harm and illustrate the use of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT; Linehan, 2014) with male college students. The authors use a case study to illustrate the use of a modified form of DBT with a male college student who self-harmed. Limitations of this approach and implications for college counselors are also addressed.
