Beyond Age Comparisons: A Plea for the Use of a Modified Brunswikian Approach to Experimental Designs in the Study of Adult Development and Aging

Abstract: This article makes a plea for experimental designs in the field of adult development and aging using an approach to research inspired by the work of Egon Brunswik. Our recommendations are intended to complement correlational approaches and to enhance the testing of explanatory mechanisms. Our arguments are predicated on the fact that the field of adult development and aging faces particular methodological challenges stemming from the investigation of individual differences approached with age group comparison … Show more

“…A second limitation pointed out by Freund and Isaacowitz (2014) refers to the problem of employing extreme age group comparisons as an approximation to investigate age-related changes as they may lead to overestimation of age-related effects and are blind to changes in middle adulthood. Moreover, age is merely used as a proxy variable for underlying psychological processes (i.e., changes in the motivation to optimize one’s current affective experience and emotional well-being) that cause the observed age group differences (e.g., in fixation patterns or emotional reactivity).…”

“…Although such research is important to conduct if one is attentive to many of the ideas derived from relational developmental systems metamodel, Freund and Isaacowitz (2013) noted that a third type of validity must be attended to in order to fully embrace the implications of the processrelational paradigm and the relational developmental systems metatheory. Inspired by the ideas of Brunswick (1955), and legitimated as a focus of such scholarship by the moment of the opposites of identity discussed by Overton (2013), Freund and Isaacowitz noted that an important tool of developmental scientists is ecologically-valid experiments.…”

“…To our knowledge, there is thus far no study that directly manipulates workers' future time perspective in an experimental paradigm. Yet, experimental designs are necessary to fully understand the mechanisms that drive development during adulthood (Freund & Isaacowitz, 2013).…”
