Resumen El término globalización sugiere ideas como la compresión del mundo, el desarrollo de una conciencia planetaria o la negación del espacio por el tiempo. En este sentido, se puede pensar que estamos ante un proceso de homogeneización a escala mundial; sin embargo, la evidencia empírica señala que numerosos lugares se han visto realzados dando lugar a una auténtica revitalización de lo local. Este artículo intenta precisar el término. En primer lugar se aborda la relación entre globalización y territorialidad para argumentar en torno a la revitalización de lo local. En un segundo acápite se abordan distintas manifestaciones de lo local para plantear el concepto de comunidad de vecindad como territorialidad local, un concepto pertinente para realidades como las latinoamericanas y cuya característica central es la coincidencia de espacios de vida y trabajo. Se concluye con una serie reflexiones sobre los retos analíticos que plantea este término.Palabras clave: globalización, comunidad de vecindad, glocalización, local-global. Abstract"Globalization" suggests ideas like compression of the world, the development of a planetary conscience or the negation of space by time. In this sense, it is possible to think about a homogenization process on a world-wide scale; nevertheless, the empirical evidence indicates the contrary. This article tries to precise the term. In first place, it deals with the relation between globalization and territoriality. Then, it shows different local manifestations in order to raise the concept of neighbourhood community, a pertinent concept for such Latin American realities, whose central characteristic is coincidence of life spaces and work. The article concludes with reflections on the analytical challenges that the term raises.

This article examines the processes through which small enterprises pursuing an accumulation strategy are inserted into the global economic regime. Our focus on small enterprises in globalization has a dual objective. First, in analytic terms, it suggests that the key question to be addressed concerns the opportunities and threats that globalization produces for this type of enterprise. In this regard, the concept of upgrading proves critical to addressing this question. Second, from a methodological perspective, the approach leads us to adopt a view ‘from below’, i.e., from the position of small enterprises themselves. The analysis is intended to complement rather than to challenge the ‘top-down’ perspectives that characterize studies of globalization, and in which small enterprises tend to be rendered invisible. This study examines two empirical cases: the software sector in Costa Rica and the development of the garment industry in a cluster concentrated in an indigenous community in Guatemala.
