The fourteenth century saw the production of innumerable Islamic manuscripts, many of which were extensively and expertly illuminated. The period is well-studied, in particular, the products of the ateliers of Baghdad, Tabriz, Shiraz and Cairo. This article concerns a manuscript from a less well-known production centre, namely that of Erzincan. This manuscript is a copy of Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī's Mas̲navī produced in 774/1373. Although discussed briefly in previous scholarship (and attributed to Erzincan), there is much more to say about this skilfully and extensively illuminated manuscript. This article examines the manuscript's text, codicology, illuminations, inscriptions and wider historical context. In doing so, it substantiates the manuscript's connection to Erzincan and adds to the growing body of literature concerning the arts of the book of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Rūm.

The emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143-80) asked a certain fortune teller, how long the dynasty of Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118) would reign. The prophetic response was the word at^ia (blood), the first three letters designating the first initials of the Komnenian emperors in the order of succession, namely, Alexios I, John II (1118-43), Manuel I, the last alpha for the name of Manuel's future successor. 2 The AIMA oracle probably appeared in the late 1150s or in the early 1160s. In 1169 Manuel named his only legitimate son Alexios. According to Niketas Choniates, the emperor chose this name not in honour of his celebrated ancestor Alexios I but following the AIMA sequence. Some time later (1171) the infant was designated his official heir. 3

Bu durumu kabul etmeyen taht varisleri ülke toprakları üzerinde yeni siyasi otoriteler tesis etmiĢlerdir. Ortaya çıkan siyasi teĢekküllerden biri de devletin Khaldia Theması topraklarına denk gelen Doğu Karadeniz bölgesinde, Komnenosların 1204 yılında kurduğu Trabzon Rum Devleti'dir. Devletin kuruluĢ yıllarında batı sınırları Karadeniz Ereğli'sine kadar uzanmaktadır. Ancak Selçuklular ve Türk beylerinin Karadeniz bölgesine olan ilgisinin artmasıyla, 1214 yılından itibaren batı sınırlarında baĢkent Trabzon'a doğru bir daralma süreci baĢlamıĢtır. Ülkenin en batısındaki Sinop'un son kez kaybedilmesiyle baĢlayan toprak kayıpları, aynı yüzyılın sonlarında Ordu'nun terkedilmesi ve batı sınırının Giresun Kalesi'ne kadar çekilmesi ile sonuçlanmıĢtır. Bu makalede batı sınırları hakkında tartıĢmalı konular bulunan Trabzon Rum Devleti'nin, XIII. ve XIV. yüzyıllardaki batı sınırları ve hâkimiyet alanı kronolojik bir sıra izlenerek ele alınacaktır.
