Between Innovation and Tradition: French Design Schools, their Historical Roots and their Innovation System

Abstract: Over the last two decades, a new kind of learning programme to promote innovation and ‘individual creativity’ has seemed to flourish at the global level in numerous universities, engineering and business schools within industrial and emergent countries. If some are really well known, such as the Stanford D. School, many have been created within old institutions. In France, the empirical field of the article, one can count more than 20 innovation/design schools. These ‘innovation’ training courses are based on … Show more

“…While focused on the French higher education context, it is complemented by qualitative studies in Finland (Aalto Design Factory) and Hangzhou (Centre for Design Innovation of the China Academy of Art) and meta‐analytic studies. The first conclusions were published in the Journal Innovations, Economics and Management (Bertilorenzi et al, ) and recently presented at the meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Sciences in September 2019 in New Orleans. Next steps are planned, both in an analytical pathway (International research meeting in June 2020 organised by CNAM and Grenoble Alpes University) and an implementation pathway (development of project‐based innovative activities in a vocational training curriculum for engineers in a “transition imperative” in Nancy (CNAM Grand Est).…”

“…The Wichita state innovation orientation follows a movement that was launched over two decades ago (Bertilorenzi, Ruano-Borbalan, & Le Coq, 2017) to implement seeds and practices of innovation within higher education through specific "innovative programmes". These were initially created in technological universities or management schools to enhance innovation capabilities in contemporary economy and societies.…”
