This chapter provides an overview of the significance of Jurji Zaydan (1861–1914) as a figure of the Arab Nahda (“renaissance”) and more broadly as both theorist of and contributor to the position of Arabic literature within what is increasingly termed “world literature.” In particular, it is argued that Zaydan's riwayat (“historical novels”) are in need of a new scholarly assessment. A World Literature approach to Zaydan's literary work may well serve to undo the harsh assessment often meted to his riwayat , placing them into new conversations and comparisons outside of the limiting framework of the nineteenth‐century European novel.

The contention of this article is that some cultural emphases shift in response to changing socio-economic realities, in order to serve specific socio-economic interests. This paper examines, through the prism of the cultural activities and ideologies of some Beiruti merchants, their contribution to the process of the Arabic nahḍ a, enlarging on their conceptual endowment to the process of modernization. The paper sheds new light on several aspects of the merchants' cultural contribution by emphasizing the strong link they forged between culture and economy, focusing on the merchants' activities and writings, especially those of Salīm Bustrus, here presented as a case study.Nous proposons dans cet article que certains choix culturels apparaissent en réponse aux changements socio-économiques et afin de servir des intérêts spécifiques. La contribution de marchands beyrouthins à la nahḍ a arabe -et notamment leur apport conceptuel au processus de modernisation -est examinée à travers le prisme de leurs activités culturelles et de leur pensée. Cet article apporte un éclairage nouveau sur plusieurs aspects de l'apport culturel des marchands, en soulignant les liens durables qu'ils surent tisser entre la culture et l'économie. Les activités et les écrits de ces marchands sont analysés, tout particulière-ment ceux de Salīm Bustrus, qui font ici l'objet d'une étude de cas.

The Syro-Lebanese from ‘Syriban’: Nostalgia, Partition, and Coexistence in Eveline Bustros’ Imagined Homeland

This article offers new insights into nostalgia and nationalism in the Syrian/Lebanese diaspora through the literary, artistic, and philanthropic work of Eveline Bustros (1878–1971). It relies on her underexplored published works as well as a rare collection of Bustros’ personal correspondence, journals, photographs, and speeches compiled by her family. After World War I, the French partitioned Bilad al-Sham into multiple polities and inaugurated a new citizenship regime dividing erstwhile Ottoman Syrians into categories of “Syrian” and “Lebanese.” In the midst of these geopolitical changes, Bustros and her family lived in Paris, where she began her celebrated literary career. Although she was a committed Lebanese nationalist, Bustros articulated hybrid notions of identity that elided distinctions between “Syrians” and “Lebanese.” Confronted with reports of sectarian violence during the Syrian Revolt (1925–1927), Bustros used her writings to grapple with the feasibility of peaceful coexistence in the Levant. Upon returning to Lebanon, she became a leading member in Lebanon’s early feminist movement while maintaining deep, affective connections to the Syrian interior. Bustros’ life and work complicate understandings of diasporic nationalism and nostalgia by highlighting fluid identities shaped by multidirectional bourgeois mobility, inviting scholars to consider nationalisms beyond the confines of the nation-state.
