“…This can be related to the literature on child caregiving and identity development (e.g., Byng‐Hall, 2008; Rose & Cohen, 2010). Furthermore, Boszormenyi‐Nagy and Krasner (1986) have pointed out that children—despite the presupposed asymmetry in giving and taking between parent and child (with the parent being supposed to give more to the child)—also have the need and the right to give. Children might hang on to their caretaker role as a way of managing the difficulties at home (East, 2010; Göpfert et al., 2004).…”

“…We focused on the research question: How do children experience parental depression and how do they experience their own caregiving in the family? The choice for family interviews rather than individual interviews with children as data collection method was informed by our clinical expertise in family therapy and in particular our concern about relational ethics, drawing on the legacy of Boszormenyi‐Nagy (Boszormenyi‐Nagy & Krasner,1986). We wanted to avoid urging children to be disloyal and answer questions that were inviting them to portray their parent in a negative way.…”

“…With triangulation, parents force their children to take sides in the conflicts between parents (Kolak & Volling, 2007). This might not only violate children's loyalty towards both parents, leaving them with destructive entitlement to exploit others (Boszormenyi-Nagy & Krasner, 1986;Láng & Birkás, 2014). Using children as weapons in the warfare between parents can also suggest to adolescents that others are merely means to achieve their own goals, which is another hallmark of Machiavellian individuals (Christie & Geis, 1970;Láng, 2015b).…”
