In this article, we look at children's experiences of parentification in families in which one of the parents is hospitalized for depression. Children (7-14 years old) and their parents were invited for a family interview. Using thematic analysis, we constructed a general framework of 14 children's experiences, guided by the explorative research question: How do children experience parental depression and how do they experience their own caregiving in the family? The thematic analysis revealed eight themes. One of these themes (trying to comfort the parent) was selected for a microanalysis in one family interview. Our study illustrates the process of overt negotiating of caretaking between parent and child with an underlying moral dilemma and related emotions. The dynamic of children hiding their worry can be seen as an answer to the parent's expressed wish to not burden her children. These dynamics are situated in ongoing debates in family therapy literature, and some suggestions for therapeutic practice are formulated.

AbstractChildrearing antecedents of Machiavellianism have been investigated, finding that cold, rejecting, and neglecting parenting is associated with Machiavellianism. However, there is a paucity of research on Machiavellianism and family functioning that is suggested to be a stronger predictor of children's adjustment than parenting. In two cross-sectional, self-report studies with 266 adolescents (115 boys) and 98 families raising adolescents (51 boys), we investigated the relationship between adolescent Machiavellianism and interparental functioning. We found that some aspects of perceived interparental conflict and poor quality coparenting were associated with higher levels of Machiavellianism in boys. The association between interparental discord and Machiavellianism has been discussed with respect to previous studies on family functioning, child maladjustment, and Machiavellianism. The selective relationship between measured indices of interparental functioning and Machiavellianism in boys has been discussed using the male vulnerability hypothesis and the distinct pathways model.

Resumo Este trabalho discute o processo de inversão geracional na família, tendo como enfoque as repercussões da parentalização na vida adulta. Inicialmente, investiga-se o conceito de parentalização, das primeiras impressões no campo psicanalítico à sua configuração no campo das psicoterapias de família. Em seguida, diferencia-se a noção de parentalização destrutiva da parentalização construtiva. Posteriormente, discute-se sobre as repercussões da parentalização na vida adulta, utilizando fragmentos de casos clínicos como ilustração. Considera-se que a inversão geracional em seu espectro crônico e amplo em suas dimensões gera dificuldades significativas para a construção de uma base pessoal segura e confiante na vida adulta, repercutindo no modo como os adultos parentalizados destrutivamente se relacionam com o outro. Tais relações transitam nos extremos, do desejo de fusão e proximidade absolutas ao desejo de distância e recusa do outro, tendo a insegurança e o medo do abandono como pano de fundo.
