Better Understanding the Workers' Retirement Decision Attitudes: Development and Validation of a New Measure

Abstract: The aim of the present research was to develop a measure that could be used in future research for in-depth study of the psychological management of retirement. We report the results of six studies involving 1,898 French workers designed to develop and assess the psychometric properties of a new instrument named the Workers' Retirement Motivations Inventory (WRMI) using the push pull anti-push anti-pull model. “…Although findings are inconsistent, several studies have shown that gender moderates the influence of organizational practices on certain employee attitudes and behaviors (Qiao et al, 2009;Andersén and Andersén, 2019;Shin et al, 2020). Future research should thus test the gender invariance of VOPi (Fouquereau et al, 2018) in order to "determine if items used in survey-type instruments mean the same things to members of different groups" (Cheung and Rensvold, 2002, p. 233). Secondly, the VOPi was validated in a French context.…”

“…Other factors and circumstances relating to premature career termination, like unsatisfactory accomplishments or emotional and physical exhaustion, relate to burnout dimensions [ 29 ]. This shows that for swimmers who participated in this study sports career termination was not voluntary, as it was caused mainly by negative reasons (push factors) [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. It is worth mentioning that elite level swimmers practice 20–30 h per week [ 19 ].…”

“…As most studies of retirement behavior center on "health and wealth" (Amabile, 2019), we however have limited knowledge about what these images may be and how they vary by key background factors such as gender, family factors, health and class. Studies of retirement anticipation typically find that individuals' sentiments about their current work situation was key to understanding how they anticipated retirement: those who had high job satisfaction were less likely to anticipate retirement positively (Davies et al, 2017;Fouquereau et al, 2018;Karp, 1989;Vickerstaff, 2006). The same went for those who felt that they had unfinished agendas at work.…”
