Better Together: Outcomes of Cooperation Versus Competition in Social Exergaming

Abstract: Children and adolescents most often play active videogames, or exergames, in a social environment. Social play may enhance the potential benefits of an exergaming experience, much like group exercise and team sports are observed to improve physical activity-related outcomes above those of solitary exercise. Two ubiquitous elements of exergames are cooperation and competition. Previous literature suggests that cooperative and competitive aspects of exergames may affect physiological and psychosocial changes. Co… Show more

“…This has an important implication for rehabilitation: participants who like competitive rehabilitation games will exercise significantly more intensely in such games . The finding is admittedly not surprising, as increased exercise intensity due to competition was already demonstrated in related fields such as weight loss [20]. Nonetheless, this is the first time that such increased exercise intensity was demonstrated in motor rehabilitation using impaired participants.…”

“…For example, potential benefits of competition may fade over multiple sessions as participants become used to the exercise and the novelty wears off. Alternatively, competition may increase aggression and frustration (as seen in competitive games for weight loss [20]), making participants unwilling to exercise again. These effects should be measurable over 3–4 sessions, allowing us to gauge “medium-term” effects of competitive exercises before launching a full clinical trial.…”

“…Though not designed intentionally nor asked specifically, CtC was reported to be more gender neutral while GtG was assumed to be designed for girls. Children's preference to social interaction and effect on their physical activity was also confirmed by [7]. We anticipate that the detailed analysis of data will further help us understand the key elements that can effect children's engagement with these apps and the affect it had on their physical activity.…”
