Betel quid chewing, cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption related to oral cancer in Taiwan

Abstract: Cigarette smoking is a well-known risk factor of upper digestive diseases. Findings on alcohol's effect on these diseases are inconsistent and with the exception of its association with esophageal cancer, little is known about betel quid chewing. This study investigated the association between use of these three substances and upper digestive diseases. We collected data from 9,275 patients receiving upper endoscopies between April 2008 and December 2013. Polynomial regressions were used to analyze the associat… Show more

“…3,27 In our study, although an especially strong risk (OR ϭ 41.2) of esophageal cancer was noticed among patients who concomitantly consumed the 3 substances, no sufficient data can be used for the exploration of 3-way interaction because there were no cancer cases in the category of non-drinking and nonsmoking chewers. Owing to areca nut chewing had a higher risk for contracting oral cancer 28 and certain oral precancers, such as oral leukoplakia and submucous fibrosis 9 than esophageal cancer. The competing causes of tumor occurrence from these diseases might explain the absence of this type of case in this population.…”

“…Tobacco smoking and alcohol abuse are involved in the pathogenesis of oral cavity cancer, and the two agents appear to act synergistically (Blot et al, 1988;Merletti et al, 1989;Ko et al, 1995). Although OL and OSF are both high-risk preneoplastic states, the independent and interactive associations between cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and areca nut chewing have not been well established in these oral diseases.…”

“…Epidemiological studies have clearly indicated that areca quid (AQ) chewing, cigarette smoking and alcohol are the major risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) (IARC, 1985;Ko et al, 1995). In Taiwan, approximately 80% of all oral cancer patients are associated with the AQ chewing habit (Ko et al, 1995).…”
