Beta rhythmicity in human motor cortex reflects neural population coupling that modulates subsequent finger coordination stability

Abstract: Human behavior is not performed completely as desired, but is influenced by the inherent rhythmicity of the brain. Here we show that anti-phase bimanual coordination stability is regulated by the dynamics of pre-movement neural oscillations in bi-hemispheric primary motor cortices (M1) and supplementary motor area (SMA). In experiment 1, pre-movement bi-hemispheric M1 phase synchrony in beta-band (M1-M1 phase synchrony) was online estimated from 129-channel scalp electroencephalograms. Anti-phase bimanual tapp… Show more

“…We constructed a unity degree model to evaluate the unity of ecological industrialization strength and potentiality based on a coupling coordination model. (26,27) It can not only measure the level of unity between ecological industrialization strength and potentiality but also reflect their degree of interdependence and mutual restriction. The formula is as follows: (28) ,…”

“…A closed‐loop system, referred to as a brain–computer interface (BCI), is employed in the neurofeedback paradigm, actuating machines when targeted neural activity is detected (Biasiucci et al, 2018 ; Kodama et al, 2023 ; Pichiorri et al, 2015 ; Tsuchimoto et al, 2019 ). This experimental framework has paved the way for causally testing the relationship between targeted neural activities and behavioral performance because repetitive use of BCI modulates neural signals in the region of interest (Bagherzadeh et al, 2020 ; Iwama, Yanagisawa, et al, 2022 ; Sitaram et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Steyvers et al, 2003 used high-frequency rTMS of the SMA and focused on the quality of coordination during cyclical bimanual movements, specifically during in-phase and anti-phase movements and showed that after rTMS, the mean relative phase error between hands increases during anti-phase trials. More recently, researchers have investigated SMA's role in on control of bimanual coordination using electroencephalography (EEG), showing that the pre-movement cortical oscillatory coupling within the motor network, including beta-band phase synchrony in a bi-hemispheric primarily motor cortices and spectral power at SMA, influences bimanual coordination stability (Iwama et al, 2022). These findings thus suggest that by monitoring and potentially enhancing the brain's preparatory activity, it may be possible to improve bimanual coordination in individuals with motor impairments.…”
