Beta-lactamase resistance genes in Enterobacteriaceae from Nigeria

Abstract: Background: Beta-lactamase genes are one of the most important groups of antimicrobial resistance genes in human and animal health. Therefore, continuous surveillance of this group of resistance genes is needed for a better understanding of the local epidemiology within a country and global dissemination.Aim: This review was carried out to identify different beta-lactamase resistance genes reported in published literature from Nigeria. Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out on eligible Nig… Show more

“…Studies point to a high prevalence among Enterobacteriaceae of the accumulation of genes from the bla family, mainly genes belonging to ESBL, OXA beta-lactamases and carbapenemases such as blaKPC and blaNDM . This phenomenon is more evident in hospital environments where selective pressure favors microorganisms carrying resistance genes and where there is a high rate of sharing of these genes [46, 47].…”

“…The literature suggests that the CTX-M-15 gene variants are widely distributed in countries in Europe, North and South America as well as Asia [ 17 ]. It is important to note that the prevalence of CTX-M-producing E. coli varies between regions [ 10 , 18 ]. The prevalence rates of CTX-M-producing E. coli are at least 60% in Asia [ 10 ] while a lower rate of 34% has been reported in West Africa [ 18 ].…”

“…Most Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistance to beta-lactams is mainly due to the production of beta-lactamases enzymes, which are often encoded either on the chromosome or plasmid 2, 3, 4, (Ogba et al, 2022;Nomeh et al, 2023;Egwu et al, 2023). Beta-lactamases, such as carbapenemase betalactamases and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), are increasingly being identified in food and companion animals, wildlife, humans, and the environment around the world 3,4,7,8 Joseph et al, 2023). The spread and convergence of multiple beta-lactamase genes across distinct resistant bacterial populations from various hosts and settings demonstrates that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a One Health issue 9 .…”
