“…,-Glucuronidase has a dual localization in the cell, in lysosomes and in the microsomal fraction (Bartalos & Gyorkey, 1963;Fishman et al, 1967). Other workers studying the intracellular distribution of this enzyme in muscular tissues, such as ox heart (Sottocasa et al, 1962), and by using conventional homogenizers have found a large proportion of the enzyme in the nuclear fraction.…”

“…There is also considerable experimental evidence that (i-D glucuronidase is concerned in the mechanism of phagocytosis (Ballantyne, 1970;Ballantyne & Guillon, 1971;Saito & Suter, 1965). This coupled with the demonstration that steroid hormones enhance /i-D glucuronidase aaivity (Ballantyne & Guillon, 1971;Levy & Conchie, 1966) may explain the beneficial effect that corticosteroid therapy has on hypertrophic scar (Bartalos & Gyorkey, 1963;Im & Hoopes, 1972).…”

“…Contemporaneous scientific publications, however, provide the context: elevated urinary beta-glucuronidase had been found to be positively associated with bladder cancer [ 36 , 37 ]. There was also some evidence that beta-glucuronidase activity was associated with atherosclerosis [ 38 ].…”

“…As of 1958, the US Food Additives Amendment stated that any food found to cause cancer when ingested by animals was grounds for removal from the Food and Drug Administration’s list of foods generally recognized as safe (GRAS) [ 42 ]. Project 259’s September 1969 finding indicated that the urine of rats fed a high-sucrose versus a high-starch diet contained higher levels of beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme that had been previously associated with bladder cancer in rats [ 36 , 37 ]. Had ISRF disclosed Project 259’s findings, it is likely that sucrose would have received scrutiny as a potential carcinogen.…”
