Beta diversity of tropical marine benthic assemblages in the Spermonde Archipelago, Indonesia

Abstract: In order to preserve diversity it is essential to understand how assemblages change across space. Despite this fact, we still know very little about how marine diversity is spatially distributed, especially among lesser‐studied invertebrate taxa. In the present study beta‐diversity patterns of sea urchins, sponges, mushroom corals and larger foraminifera were assessed in the Spermonde Archipelago (Indonesia). Using ordinations we showed that the inshore zone (<5 km offshore), midshore zone (5 < x < 30 km offsh… Show more

“…Previous studies report an on-offshore gradient in faunal assemblages across the Spermonde Archipelago (Cleary et al, 2005;Becking et al, 2006;Cleary and Renema, 2007;Hoeksema, 2012;Sawall et al, 2012). This may explain why P. Panambungan differs in its surface sediment composition in comparison to the outer reefs islands.…”

“…The coral reef system of the Spermonde Archipelago has been the focus of extensive studies in the past two decades, serving as a model system to examine spatial differences in biodiversity, ecological and geological processes, and anthropogenic influences along a cross-shelf gradient within the Coral Triangle (Edinger et al, 1998;Renema and Troelstra, 2001;Cleary et al, 2005;Becking et al, 2006;Sawall et al, 2011Sawall et al, , 2013Hoeksema, 2012;Plass-Johnson et al, 2015a, 2016aPolonia et al, 2015). In this study, we go beyond previous research by identifying several important indicators of water quality and the main environmental drivers of coral reef community composition in the Spermonde Archipelago, including an assessment of temporal trends.…”

“…Finally, offshore islands (>27 km) are rarely exposed to high levels of terrestrial effluents from the mainland. Benthic communities, sponges, and corals have shown strong on-to-offshore patterns in diversity (Edinger et al, 2000a;Cleary et al, 2005;Becking et al, 2006;de Voogd et al, 2006). Local island human populations rely heavily on nearby coral reefs (Ferse et al, 2014).…”

“…The majority of sponge species in the coastal bay mangrove habitat are common, widely distributed, and have been recorded in tropical sheltered bays, sandy reef flats, or coral reefs across Indonesia (e.g. Becking et al 2006, de Voogd & Cleary 2008, 2009). In contrast, a large portion of the species in the lakes was not known from any published records of the reefs; many are undescribed species and new to science.…”
