Beta-Catenin and Plakoglobin Expression during Zebrafish Tooth Development and Replacement

Abstract: We analyzed the protein distribution of two cadherin-associated molecules, plakoglobin and β-catenin, during the different stages of tooth development and tooth replacement in zebrafish. Plakoglobin was detected at the plasma membrane already at the onset of tooth development in the epithelial cells of the tooth. This pattern remained unaltered during further tooth development. The mesenchymal cells only showed plakoglobin from cytodifferentiation onwards. Plakoglobin 1a morpholino-injected embryos showed norm… Show more

“…Both annexin and gelsolin (GSN) help regulate cytoskeletal functions in ameloblast cytotaxis during secretion (Hubbard, 1995). While GSN has been implied in saliva-enamel exchange (Juusela, 2016; Heller et al, 2017), we detected the protein in secretory and early maturation stage enamel, along with cadherin 2 (CDH2) and junction plakoglobin (JUP) (Supplementary Table 1), the latter an important component of ameloblast desmosome complexes (Fausser et al, 1998; Sorkin et al, 2000; Kieffer-Combeau et al, 2001; Verstraeten et al, 2016).…”

“…Previous expression assays revealed that β-catenin, Plakoglobin, and E-Cadherin are expressed in the zebrafish SDL [ 87 , 88 ]. We aimed to bolster our understanding of gene expression in naïve dental epithelia by determining whether the putative stickleback SDE expresses gene orthologs that mark the zebrafish SDL.…”

“…2c ). TCF/LEF proteins, which mediate WNT/CTNNB signaling, play a crucial role in tooth development 23 Several members of the Sox protein family, which is known to regulate WNT signaling, are also necessary for tooth development 24 . Evolutionarily conserved motifs for TCF/LEF may be involved in possible crosstalk between the SHH and WNT signaling pathways.…”
