“…This accounts for the suggestion that HBV vaccination may be started at 6 weeks of age if it is not possible to deliver the first dose at birth, with other vaccines. 7 This presumption is based on a study done in Delhi by Nayak et al 8 in 8,575 pregnant women. They found that 3.7% (N 5 322) women were HBsAg positive and just 19% of babies born to these HBsAg positive mothers got infected with HBV, compared with 3% of those born to HBsAg negative mothers.…”

“…By applying mathematical calculation, it was suggested that considering the population prevalence of 3.7%, 14% of all HBV carriers in India would have acquired HBV through vertical route and the remaining 86% through horizontal route. 7 In a study of 116 children with CHB from Delhi, 9 it was shown that two-thirds of children were in the immunetolerant phase of HBV infection (characteristics of perinatally acquired HBV), and in 74% of cases the mother is the source of infection. Our experience in 203 children also substantiates the same results (56% were in the immune-tolerant phase of HBV and mothers were the source in 68% of cases).…”
