English for automotive technology is a specific discipline in which the students require particular language learning materials to meet their academic and future career needs. Hence, contextual material is a prerequisite to achieving the success of language learning. Drawing on this issue, the present study identified the English material needs of automotive technology students for working in vehicle inspection. The required data were collected using a web-based questionnaire and semi-structured interview from 186 students, 7 English lecturers, and 44 graduates of Poltrada Bali and PKTJ Tegal Indonesia who were purposively selected as the participants. This study classified English materials into content areas of automotive technology, language skills, and linguistic features. The results revealed that content areas needed by the students included vehicle components and their performances, ranging from engine system to support components. This study further suggested that speaking and reading were the most frequently needed skills than the other two skills because of the rapid growth of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) and the needs of international information exchange in the automotive field. It was also depicted that the students preferred applied terminologies and translation to grammar since many automotive technology references and vehicle inspection were normally written in English. The results of this study could serve as an overview for lecturers and institution in automotive technology program to create standard syllabus and contextual material textbooks for the students.

“…The discussion of ESP course itself cannot be separated from the discussion of Needs Analysis (NA) due to its fundamental in the field of ESP (Hutchinson and Waters 1987;Mede 2014;Robinson 1991 (Widodo 2017;Benaventa, Reye, and S.S. 2015;Mohammed 2016) in Boroujeni andFard 2013, Kothalawala 2015). As a 'cornerstone' of lesson plans, syllabus design, material evaluation and development, and instructional design and assessment development (Widodo 2017;Benaventa, Reye, and S.S. 2015;Mohammed 2016), NA is done the first time as the basic principle to assess students' needs, specific teaching objectives (Otilia 2015) and also the 'target discipline' (Aliakbaria and M. 2010;Saliua and Hajrullaia 2016). The vast growths of multinational and national companies to world-class companies in Indonesia result in the advanced demand for English mastery in every working sector including Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). This article aims at investigating the needs and actual use of English in a working environment specifically at OSH. This research adopted mix method which use questionnaire and open-ended interview to obtain the data on the needs of English in OSH field matching to the prerequisite test in recruitment as well as the use of English from fifteen multinational and national companies. The result of the investigation revealed that English certification positioned as a prerequisite test and getting a high priority in job recruitment. When recruiting, companies expect at least an intermediate level for English. Recruits at least have to be able to manage communicative competence for daily conversation and perform a solid knowledge and skills of general OSH vocabulary. Productive skills are more required for communicating to expatriates, leading the meeting, doing a presentation, writing a report and designing Standard Operational Procedure (SOP). This research implies that in spite of position as the foreign language in Indonesia, English has a vital role in the working environment.

Teaching English for midwifery students is categorized as English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In this course, need analysis need to be conducted to discover what students already know, what they need to know, and what they want to know. To this end, the study investigated the target needs and learning needs of midwifery students. A total of 53 students responded to a questionnaire and open-ended interview. The results demonstrated that students wanted to be able to communicate English fluently. Also, they wanted to understand various English texts related to their midwifery field. The result also showed that most students were at the beginner level indicating that they were just able to understand simple sentences and expressions used in a daily life. Regarding learning needs, students preferred to have the input text in the form of dialogue and monologue provided with pictures with the length of the texts of less than 150 words and between 150-250 words. According to the results obtained from this study, it can be concluded that need analysis needs to be conducted before giving the English course based on the students’ field study.
