Best Practices for Engaging Underserved Populations

Abstract: This work developed and applied a set of “best practices” when engaging marginalized populations to collect data, attitudes, and opinions around a research topic. To support city stakeholders making decisions to create more sustainable and equitable cities, data-driven simulation models are being developed. To ensure that these models are equitable, the needs of marginalized populations must be included. The challenge, however, in understanding these needs is that researchers have often struggled to reach and … Show more

“…In promoting equitable and just practices, HF/E professionals must be especially sensitive to marginalized populations, which are often the populations we look to when doing projects incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI; Mertens, 2007). This study expands prior work outlining best practices to engage underserved populations (e.g., Stonewall et al, 2017), as we focus on the entire project process rather than strictly data collection.…”

“…At the 2018 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) Annual Meeting, attendees of sessions organized with the Diversity and Inclusion Committee requested concrete steps to advance equity and justice in HF/E (Wooldridge et al, 2019). Stonewall (2017) offers best practices for collecting data in marginalized communities.…”

“…As a result, city officials have struggled to reach these populations. Best practices and implementation strategies were developed to overcome these barriers through a synthesis of related literature and the narratives of other researchers (Table 1) (Cetin & Novoselac 2015;Stonewall et al 2017).…”

“…Custom content is then delivered through the app, response data is automatically uploaded to a server, and researchers can access the data through the centralized web interface (Kalvelage, Dorneich, Seeger, Welk, Gilbert, Moon, Brown, & Jafir, 2018). Customization within the app and questionnaires was completed with guidance from "Best Practices" for gathering data from underserved populations (Stonewall, et al, 2017). All study materials (recruitment, mobile app, and questionnaires) were offered in two languages (English and Spanish) with plain wording to facilitate communication across language barriers.…”
